Azkals boss Dan Palami recounts family’s Tacloban nightmare

Azkals boss Dan Palami
Last week Azkals manager Dan Palami was in Singapore's Changi airport. He had just seen his club team, Global, lose the Singapore Cup third place match. The Leyteño was checking in for his flight to Abu Dhabi for last Saturday's Azkals match with the United Arab Emirates.

And then he got a phone call that changed everything.

He heard that Typhoon Yolanda had barreled into Tacloban, where his parents, brother, and sister-in-law live together in one house. Palami decided to go back home to Manila instead.

The Azkals manager lost contact with his family for two days. When he was finally able to speak to his loved ones, the news was awful.

While his parents, Boy and Sonia, and brother Ted and his wife Heidi were safe, two other members of the Palami household weren't so lucky.

Rissa and Katkat were two young Tacloban women who the Palamis were helping through college at St. Theresa's Educational Foundation Tacloban Inc. (STEFTI), the school the Palami family owns. They lived at the Palami house as household help.

The storm surge that came with Yolanda's winds on Thursday roared into the Palami's home just 800 meters away from the shore, engulfing the entire first floor up to the ceiling.

“There are tall buildings in between the shore and our house. I thought they would block the waves. But the water still reached my family.”

Palami's family members were in the second floor when the water hit. But Rissa and Katkat were in their downstairs quarters. They never stood a chance, and drowned in the onrushing torrent.

Rissa, a first-year Education student in STEFTI, was previously the nanny to Palami's kids in Manila, but elected to go home to Tacloban to pursue a college education instead. That decision cost her her life.

The Palamis who survived were also in dire straits. According to Dan, he has had only intermittent contact with his family since the tragedy. And the stories they tell are heart-rending.

Dan's parents must walk six kilometers to the city hall, the only spot with signal and cell phone service, to call Dan. The way there is a dystopian hellhole of devastated homes and debris scattered all over the place.

“But the worst part for them was seeing dead bodies on the way. And realizing that some of the bodies were people they knew, friends and neighbors.”

The four are low on provisions. Biscuits are their only sustenance, and they carefully sip the few remaining bottles of water they have to make them last as long as possible.

Palami tried to send a charter plane from Cebu to pick up his family. But there was only a four-hour window for planes to land in the ravaged Tacloban airport, and since there was no way of contacting the family, it became logistically impossible.

As of the writing of this report, Palami had instructed the four to make the arduous ten-kilometer trek to the airport (his parents are in their seventies) and sleep there while another chartered Cessna is scheduled to take the family to safety on Tuesday.

The Palamis stuck in Tacloban speak of unspeakable anarchy in the streets of Tacloban, where looting is rampant.

“This catastrophe has brought out the best in some people and the worst in others,” Palami laments. His family also tells him that the city jail has been affected, and inmates are roaming free.

Palami has also sent a land convoy over the San Juanico Bridge from Samar to help out relatives. He says a second batch will be on its way soon, with a security detail.

According to Dan the Azkals will do their part to chip in. On Friday there will be a donation drive in Mercato in Taguig from 4 pm until 3 am the next day. For donations in kind, priority items are the essentials: water, ready-to-eat food, mats, blankets, and first aid items. The Azkals' away friendly at India, which kicks off at 9 pm, will also be aired there live. You may visit the event's Facebook page for more details.

For now all Palami can do is wait and hope that the chartered plane can indeed bring his family safe to Cebu. Meanwhile he plans for the future in Tacloban.

“I have to build a completely new house. And because of this, I have to think twice about building it in the same place.”

Azkals release lineup ahead of difficult UAE test

MANILA, Philippines – Less than a month after defending their Peace Cup title in Bacolod, the Philippine National Football Team will face what would be one of their most formidable oppositions to date, the United Arab Emirates, in an international friendly on Saturday, Nov 9, 2013.

The Azkals will not have their strongest lineup in their visit to Abu Dhabi. Instead, the team will use the match as a springboard for the under-23 squad who will be missing much-needed exposure from this year’s edition of the South East Asian Games. (READ: No Azkals, Malditas in SEA Games)

Despite being perched atop Southeast Asia at an all-time high FIFA ranking of 137th, the Philippine Olympic Committee ironically decided not to field the Azkals’ U23 squad in the biennial regional meet to be held in Myanmar this December.

Jason de Jong, Mark Hartmann, OJ Porteria, Jeff Christiaens, Marwin Angeles, Patrick Deyto, and Amani Aguinaldo, who were all supposed to spearhead the U23 squad in the SEA Games, were included in the initial lineup that will face the 71st-ranked UAE.

Also making it to the provisional squad against the Middle Eastern powerhouse are local stars Phil and James Younghusband, Chieffy Caligdong, Ed Sacapano, Jerry Barbaso, Misagh Bahadoran, Chris Greatwich and Angel Guirado, while Jerry Lucena, Rob Gier, Juani Guirado, Ray Jonsson, and Patrick Reichelt will also be flying in from Europe and Thailand to join the team.

Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss will be missing some overseas-based players in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Stephan Schrock, Fulham’s Neil Etheridge, Buriram United’s Javier Patino, Dennis Cagara of Lyngby and Ronald Muller who plays for Servette FC.

The Philippines will then face India, ranked 154th in the world, on November 15 as they continue their preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup next year in Maldives. - Rappler.com

Younghusbands, Caligdong may miss UFL match in Cebu

PHILIPPINE Azkals front liners Emilio “Chiefy” Caligdong of the Green Archers United Globe and James and Phil Younghusband of the Loyola Meralco Sparks FC might miss their bearing match in the ongoing United Football League (UFL) here at the Aboitiz Football Field on Nov. 10.

This after the Azkals are scheduled to fly to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a friendly match on Nov. 9 at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

But even without the Azkals stars, the bearing match will still push through to highlight the opening of the 16th season of the Aboitiz Football Cup, according to Cebu Football Association’s (CFA) grassroots committee chairman Raffy Musni in an interview with Cebu Daily News .

But Musni said the CFA will still be waiting for the final announcement from the UFL if Caligdong and the Younghusbands will play in the said match.

“With the Azkals’ upcoming schedules, it seems that Caligdong and the Younghusbands could miss playing for their teams but we have to wait for the announcement from UFL regarding the development of the three football stars’ appearance in the opening of the Aboitiz Football Cup,” Musni said.

The Philippine team is also set to face India on Nov. 15.

The Loyola Meralco Sparks recently won via a lopsided victory over the Blue Guards FC, 33-0, last Wednesday at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig City. The Green Archers FC also defeated the Blue Guards last Oct. 20.

Love-less Phil hits 2 goals in 2 minutes

In a magical moment, Phil Younghusband scored two goals in a two-minute span to highlight a sensational 6-goal performance that helped power the Loyola Meralco Sparks to a 9-0 drubbing of Navy and into the knockout stage of the United Football League (UFL) Cup Sunday night at the Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill.

The Philippine Azkals striker struck in the 48th, 49th, 59th, 67th, 72nd and 76th minutes to propel the Sparks to their second win in as many matches and tie idle Green Archers United for the lead in Group E with six points apiece.

Younghusband’s exploits came in his first match since announcing his breakup with actress Angel Locsin.

His six-goal performance was Younghusband’s best since scoring seven against Team Soccerroo in the 2011 UFL Cup.

Meanwhile, defending champion Stallion FC and newly relegated second division side Air Force beat separate rivals to join Loyola in the knockout stage.

Stallion drew goals from Reuben Doctora, Bo Bae Park and Jeremy Taylor John to defeat Bright Star FC, 3-1, while Ian Araneta, Neckson Leonora and Randy Bela-Ong scored in Air Force’s 3-0 beating of Agila FC.

Both clubs are tied for second place in Group C with six points apiece, trailing surprise leader Cebu Queen City United by one point.

The once mighty Air Force booters, who won the UFL Cup in 2009 and 2011, earned a return trip to the knockout stage after being eliminated in the group stage last year.

In the other match, Abdou Moussa Obono scored a hat trick as Dolphins United thrashed Blue Guards FC, 11-1, to revive its flickering hopes of making the knockout stage. It was the club’s first win in three matches.

Azkals now ranked No. 1 in Southeast Asia

Philippine Azkals
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines on Thursday leap-frogged to its best-ever standing in the International Football Federation (Fifa) world rankings and spiked this latest achievement with its emergence as the new No. 1 nation in Southeast Asia.

Fresh from ruling the Phl Peace Cup in Bacolod, the Pinoy booters received another milestone as they vaulted into 137th spot in the Fifa’s latest monthly list – their highest since the introduction of the ranking list in 1993.

With this new position, Phl also zoomed to the top of the table among Asean nations, bumping off Thailand (142nd), Myanmar (149th), Vietnam (151st), reigning AFF Suzuki Cup champion Singapore (155th), Malaysia (160th), Indonesia (162nd), Laos (167th), Brunei and Timor Leste (joint 163rd) and Cambodia (198th).

The Azkals earned 129 ranking points from their 3-1 victory over Pakistan in the last day of the Peace Cup, a win that’s one for the books as they crawled back from a 0-1 deficit and secured the needed two-goal margin to claim the title.

“This is the result of the hard work and sacrifice of those involved with the national team, particularly the players and the support of the Philippine Football Federation,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.

“Getting the top ranking in Southeast Asia has been our goal since we started with the national team. I’m glad that our efforts have been rewarded,” he added.

PFF president Nonong Araneta, for his part, said: “We hope that the new ranking will continue inspiring the team to reach greater heights.”

Despite being the top dog in SEA in terms of world rankings, though, the Phl will not be competing in the SEA Games in Myanmar, the region’s premier competition for U-23 football, as it couldn’t get the blessing from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

This feat, meanwhile, should provide a huge confidence boost for the Azkals as they gear up for the 2014 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup.

"We want to win the Challenge Cup and represent the country in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup," said Palami.

Azkals now SE Asia’s top team

Philippines peace cup
Drawing strength from the 3-1 victory over Pakistan that sealed its triumph in the Philippine Peace Cup last Tuesday, the Philippines climbed to its highest ranking in history, vaulting four places up to No. 137 in the latest International Football Federation (Fifa) rankings.

And for the first time, the Azkals supplanted Thailand as the No. 1-ranked side in Southeast Asia after the Thais dropped to No. 143 in the world.

Myanmar is the third best team in Southeast Asia at 149, followed by Vietnam (151), Singapore (155), Malaysia (160), Indonesia (162), Laos (165), Timor Leste (193), Brunei (193) and Cambodia (198).

Ironically, the Philippines is not sending a football team to the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar this December.

The Fifa ranking system not only considers recent results, but also gives weight to the performance of the national team since 2010. The Azkals picked up 213 ranking points over the past month.

“This is the result of the hard work and sacrifice of those involved with the national team, particularly the players, and the support of the Philippine Football Federation,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.

“Getting the top ranking in Southeast Asia has been our goal since we started with the national team. I’m glad that our efforts have been rewarded,” added Palami, who started supporting the team in 2010.

“We hope that the new ranking will continue to inspire the team to reach greater heights,” said PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta.

Though the Azkals, known for their resiliency, have played only seven matches this year, they endured a busy schedule in the past two years, allowing them to pick up significant ranking points.

Palami believes the rankings will give the Azkals a huge confidence boost as they prepare for the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives in May next year.

The winner of the Challenge Cup will qualify for the Asian Cup, which has been the target of the Azkals.

“We should not lose sight of the bigger picture, which is the Challenge Cup,” said Palami.

“We want to win that championship. To go there and to do that will take more than just a win in the Peace Cup as it will take a lot of effort from the stakeholders of the sport.”

Azkals dedicate Peace Cup win to quake victims

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Azkals dedicated their stirring win in the Peace Cup

Football Invitationals to the victims of the destructive earthquake, which struck the Visayas and other parts of the country on Tuesday.

The Azkals defended their Peace Cup crown with a 3-1 victory over Pakistan on Tuesday night at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

It came after a 7.2-magnitude quake shook Visayas, especially the provinces of Cebu and Bohol, with the death toll reaching over 100.

“We dedicate this win to our kababayans that are affected by the earthquake. We hope this victory can lift their spirits,” said team manager Dan Palami.

Filipino-German Stephan Schrock, a Bundesliga veteran who was inspired by the hometown crowd, delivered the victory-clinching goal for the Filipinos in the 88th minute.

“Salamat po sa lahat ng suporta. Mahal namin kayong lahat. Pinagdadaga namin lahat ng earthquake victim. Sana maging matatag kayo,” Schrock tweeted (@s17Stephan).

Misagh Bahadoran and Juani Guirado also offered their support on Twitter.

“We offer this victory to those affected by the earthquake and hoping we bring a little smile on the faces of our fellowmen” said @misagh_9.

The Azkals, who have been in the capital province of Negros Occidental since last week for the three-nation tournament, also felt the effects of the earthquake.

“Earthquake to wake us up,” tweeted National team mainstay James Younghusband.

It wasn’t a new experience for most of the Azkals, though.

In 2011, the team was in the middle of its AFC Challenge Cup buildup in Gotemba when a massive magnitude-8.9 quake rocked most of Japan.

They were also in Myanmar for the Challenge Cup group stages when an earthquake, measuring 6.8 in the Richter scale, hit.

Azkals rally to retain Peace Cup boot crown

Azkals Stephan Schrock
BACOLOD CITY—Inspired by the brilliance of German Bundesliga veteran Stephan Schrock, the Philippines claimed the Philippine Peace Cup with a come-from-behind 3-1 triumph over Pakistan amid a festive atmosphere at Panaad Stadium here.

The fleet-footed Schrock, who plays club football for Eintracht Frankfurt, set up the equalizer of Patrick Reichelt in the 33rd minute before capping his heroics with a well-taken goal two minutes from time that sent the crowd into delirium.

Known for delivering important goals for the country, midfielder Chris Greatwich scored the go-ahead goal for 2-1 in the 78th minute.

The Azkals dropped a 1-2 decision to Chinese-Taipei on opening-day last Friday and needed at least a 2-1 victory to keep the Peace Cup.

They did that and more with a strong performance that provided a glimpse of their potential when they vie for an Asian Cup berth in the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives in May.

“The team showed what they can achieve if they play cohesively,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami, who, along with Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta, received the trophy from Bacolod City mayor Monico Puentevella. “We know there’s a long way to go for us but we’re happy with the win as it boosts our confidence.”

Etheridge was solid in between the posts, while Rob Gier and Juani Guirado were hardly troubled in the second half. Jerry Lucena put in a fine shift as defensive midfielder, while Misagh Bahadoran, getting a rare start, provided flashes of brilliance on the left flank.

Just like in past matches that mattered, the Azkals proved resilient even after going behind after 15 minutes when Hassan Bashir cut inside Jerry Barbaso and slotted the ball past a helpless Neil Etheridge.

Schrock’s quality, however, was there for everyone to see. He spearheaded the comeback, flicking the ball past a defender before going on a bristling run down the line. With time and space, Schrock found Reichelt at the middle for a first-time finish to a quick counter-attack.

Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella confirmed that the Philippine Azkals will be defending the Philippine Peace Cup against Pakistan and Chinese Taipei at the Panaad Stadium on October 11, 13 and 15, a press release from city hall said.

Puentevella said the Philippine Football Federation informed his office that the Azkals will go against Pakistan (ranked 170) and Chinese Taipei whom they defeated last year, 3-1, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. The win also marked Philippine Football's first international title in 99 years.

The Azkals are ranked number 141 by FIFA, or the Fédération Internationale de Football Association as the sport's governing body. Chinese Taipei, on the other hand is 5 ranks south of Pakistan at 175.

A member of FIFA's Marketing and Television Committee, Puentevella foresees a jam-packed Panaad crowd on the said dates as Bacolod and Negros are known for their ardor for the sport, the press release said.

“We know football and we have a deep passion for the game. Whether it's the Azkals or the Ceres football team playing, I know that Panaad will be full. We are just as synonymous with football as we are with MassKara,” Puentevella said.

He also reminded that Group F regional qualifier of the 3 rd PFF Smart National Club Championship will be played in Panaad starting tomorrow until Sunday with defending champion Ceres FC facing the teams from Iloilo, Capiz, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.*

Peace Cup: PFF eyeing 2 African teams

Philippine Football Federation Logo
BENT on giving the national side formidable opposition, the Philippine Football Federation is eyeing two more African teams to complete the cast in the four-nation Philippine Peace Cup in Bacolod City from Oct. 11 to 15.

PFF general secretary Ed Gastanes said they are close to finalizing the stint of Rwanda in the second edition of the tournament won by the Azkals last year.

Gastanes said they have also invited Uganda to play in the tournament with Afghanistan and Burundi also being eyed as possible opponents.

Only Chinese-Taipei has confirmed its participation and the PFF has set a Friday deadline to complete the cast for the tournament which is also meant to help the Azkals prepare for the AFC Challenge Cup next year.

Azkals manager Dan Palami said getting strong opposition from Africa will augur well for the Challenge Cup preparations.

“We’re looking at the African countries as quality opponents for our team,” said Palami.

Gastanes said the PFF was forced to look at  Azkals coach Michael Weiss initially broached the idea of having Rwanda as part of the roster of teams as he had served as technical director in the African country.

Meanwhile, the Azkals suffered a huge blow following news that defender Carlie de Murga tore his ACL in a United Football League pre season match with his club, Global.

Azkals find ray of hope with new Challenge Cup sked

The 2014 AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives—the Philippines’ only chance of qualifying for the Asian Cup in 2015—has been moved from March to the third week of May, giving the Azkals a chance to field their strongest possible lineup.

While the Asian Football Confederation has yet to announce the change in dates, Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta told the Inquirer yesterday that the AFC Competitions Committee had already approved the PFF’s request to move the tournament, where the champion will earn a ticket to the Asian Cup in 2015 in Australia.

With the new dates, the Azkals will have Europe-based players like Stephan Schrock, Neil Etheridge, Jerry Lucena, Roland Muller and Dennis Cagara available for selection with the European football season already done a few weeks before the tournament starts.

The Philippines, powered by its Europe-based players and new Filipino-Spanish striker Javier Patino, qualified as the best team in Group E after beating Cambodia and Turkmenistan at Rizal Memorial Stadium last March.

But there were still concerns whether the Azkals can come up with the same strong core for the main tournament, which was originally scheduled in the second week of March—a crucial time in the European club football calendar.

“We cited the fact that the Challenge Cup is an Asian Cup qualifier, which is also held on Fifa international match dates,” said Araneta. “We were hoping for parity and I think our request made sense to them (AFC).”

Azkals manager Dan Palami welcomed the development, but stressed that there is still plenty of work ahead for the squad, which will vie for the title against Turkmenistan, Laos, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Palestine, Kyrgyzstan and host Maldives.

“It’s a very welcome development for us because we intend to field our strongest team ever in the Maldives Challenge Cup and the dates being moved have actually allowed us to do that,” said Palami, who has bankrolled the team since 2010.

“It is up to (team management) and the PFF to ensure that we bring for the Philippines the best players, the best staff and the best coach to lead us toward our Asian Cup dream.”

While the development has come with added pressure, Palami is confident the team will be up to the challenge.

“There is added pressure because we find ourselves in a situation where the chance to be in the Asian Cup is within grasp, but I’m sure, our team will respond well to the pressure.

Azkals pick up stride with Peace Cup, friendlies

WITH the AFC Challenge Cup only a few months away, the Philippine Azkals are set for a busy final quarter of the year with the Philippine Peace Cup and a series of friendlies against high-level teams to prepare them for the major tournament that dangles a spot in the Asian Cup.

Azkals manager Dan Palami said preparations for the Challenge Cup will already kick into high gear in the final quarter of 2013 as the team braces for a tough battle in the Challenge Cup in the Maldives in March.

“The target is to win the tournament and reach the Asian Cup,” said Palami, who hinted at regular training sessions for the Azkals even at the middle of the United Football League season just to whip the side into fighting form.

After the friendly match against Indonesia last Wednesday in Solo, Central Java, where the Azkals lost, 0-2, the Philippine Football Federation is now eyeing a friendly against New Zealand and its neighbor New Caledonia for September.

The Azkals will also be in action the following month when they defend their Philippine Peace Cup title from Oct. 11 to 15 in Bacolod City, which is hosting an international match for the first time since the Guam-Philippines game in June last year.

Philippine Football Federation general-secretary Ed Gastanes said they are looking at Challenge Cup qualifier Kyrgyzstan as a possible participant in the Peace Cup.

New Caledonia will also be invited for the five-day tournament if the friendly against the New Caledonians does not push through next month.

The Azkals ruled the Peace Cup last year, besting Chinese-Taipei, Guam and Macau at Rizal Memorial Stadium. Gastanes said the PFF will invite one of the teams that saw action last year to complete the cast in Bacolod.

PH Azkals failed to defeat Indonesia in friendly

The Philippines football team Azkals failed to defeat Indonesia in their friendly game late Wednesday night at the Manahan Stadium in Surakarta, Indonesia. Azkals fell at the hands of Southeast Asian rival Indonesia and ended the game 0-2 .

Azkals renew rivalry with Indonesians today

THE PHILIPPINES steps up its preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup next year with a showdown with Southeast Asian rival Indonesia at Manahan Stadium in Surakarta, Indonesia, tonight.

The Azkals, who arrived in the city early Tuesday after a 15-hour journey from Manila, will be fielding several new players with manager Dan Palami also using the match to expose standouts from the Under-23 side, which is building up for the Southeast Asian Games late this year.

Kickoff is at 9 p.m. with Indonesia looking to continue asserting its might against the Azkals, who have climbed three places to their highest ranking of No. 141.

It will be the fourth meeting between the two sides since 2010, when the Azkals lost two semifinal matches against the Garuda in the Suzuki Cup. The two squads also battled to a tense 2-2 draw at Rizal Memorial Stadium in June 2012.

“We are looking forward to jump-starting our preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup,” said Palami. “This time, we’re sending fresh faces as we try to take advantage of the occasion to test younger players.”

Mark Hartmann, Amani Aguinaldo, Paolo Bugas and Patrick Deyto were among the Under-23 standouts who were included in the squad by coach Michael Weiss, who also recalled veterans Angel Guirado, Rob Gier, Chieffy Caligdong and Phil and James Younghusband to strengthen the side.

Indonesia has shown a penchant of naturalizing foreign players to boost its squad.

The latest players who were given their Indonesian naturalization papers are the Nigerian pair of Gregory Nkwolo and Victory Ibonefo.

The Indonesians will also parade the fleet-footed Andik Vermansyah, a young midfielder who showed immense potential in the Suzuki Cup, and Patrich Wanggai, who scored against the Azkals in the friendly last year.

“We know that they have put naturalized players in their roster and I’m sure this made them stronger,” said Palami.

Balls Channel launches Gameday Weekend

GAME DAY spills over to the weekend as the Balls Channel brings Gameday Weekend, a spin-off of its popular daily sports news program.

Gretchen Ho
Hosted by Gretchen Ho and Mia Cabalfin, and featuring some members of the Philippine Azkals, the show is a 30-minute program which will air every Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on the cable sports channel beginning on June 29. It will have replays on Studio 23 later in the night at 9:30 p.m.

Gameday Weekend is a byproduct of the daily show Gameday with Boom Gonzales which airs every morning from Monday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. But while Gonzales’ show mostly delivers sports news straight up, Gameday Weekend puts a new spin on it as it is a lifestyle-oriented sports show that is built for the weekend warriors.

The show has a wide range of features, which includes spotlight on prominent athletes’ achievements, interviews with fitness experts and news on the latest sports gears, among others.

The Sunday airing will showcase a segment called "The Showdown" where the female hosts are pitted against members of the Azkals in various sports.

"It was a natural progression from the weekday program of doing sports news and recaps into getting something else," said Gonzales, who spoke on behalf of the production team, when asked for the reason for putting up the new show.

"We wanted a different format for Saturday and Sunday and I think we have the perfect hosts [in Gretchen and Mia] for it. And, again, the idea of having the Azkals with our hosts presents a different dynamic also. But it was just a natural progression from the Monday to Friday format so that when it comes to the weekends we will present something different but still using the brand and the name Gameday," added Gonzales, who hosted the launching of the new program yesterday.

For Ho, who recently finished his studies and eligibility as a member of the Ateneo de Manila University volleyball team, Gameday Weekend marks her first full-time hosting stint on TV.

"It is a privilege for me to be here and to be chosen by the management of Balls," said Ho, adding she is keeping herself fit by working out to keep up with the physical demands of the show while working double time in honing her hosting skills with the help of the people behind the program. -- Michael Angelo S. Weiss cited for work with Azkals

michael weiss
National football team coach Michael Weiss has been cited for his work with the Philippine Azkals by the German Football Ambassador 2013, which puts him in an elite group of nominees composed of high-profile German coaches from all over the world.

Weiss, who started coaching the Azkals in 2011 and steered the team to a third place finish in the AFC Challenge Cup and a semifinal stint in the AFF Suzuki Cup last year, was honored in a ceremony attended by Deutscher Fussball Botschafter founder Roland Bischoff in Cebu City Tuesday.

The award is given to German coaches who helped in the development of the sport outside Germany, according to Bischoff.
“I am positive that Michael Weiss will continue to be a major part in the development of football in the Philippines,” Bischoff added.

Among the nominees for the award include former German national team star Jurgen Klinsman, who now coaches the United States side, Bernd Stange, who is at the helm in Singapore, and Otto Pfister, who established a name for himself coaching national teams in Africa. The other nominee is Holger Obermann, who promotes women’s and youth football.

As part of his reward, Weiss was given the option to select a social project of his choice that will be supported by the DFB. The Azkals coach picked the Cebu Football Association, which has already started distributing footballs to 11 member clubs as part of the project.

“I am very honored that I was mentioned and nominated in the same category with such renowned German coaches who have had great success in foreign countries,” Weiss said. “For the moment, my full concentration is with the Philippine national team and the preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup next year in the Maldives.”

Racist issue mars Azkals win vs HK

Team Azkals vs. Hong Kong
HONG KONG—Friendly? Not so.

A scintillating victory by the Philippines in what was supposed to be a friendly match against Hong Kong took a controversial turn when the host country’s football officials were forced to confront reports of racist abuse during the match.

In what was easily one of the finest performance by the Azkals away from home, Neil Etheridge provided a quality performance between the posts, preserving James Younghusband’s first half goal in a 1-0 victory Tuesday night that was marred by an unruly home crowd at Mongkok Stadium here.

The South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday that Hong Kong fans at the game called their Filipino counterparts “slaves,” threw bottles at them and booed the Philippine national anthem.

The hostile crowd grew increasingly frustrated with every impressive save by Etheridge in a torrid final 20 minutes.

But ugly scenes marred the end of the match with the home crowd throwing debris at the Azkals and the Filipino gallery, which were made up mostly of women and children.

“This win is even more meaningful for us because of the large number of Filipinos working in Hong Kong,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “We dedicate this victory to them.”

Hong Kong Football Association spokesman Benny Chan said it will release an official report to the public and Fifa after it completes its investigation.

Philippine football officials said they were waiting for a report from their team before deciding whether to complain to Fifa.

The incident comes as Fifa decided last week to treat racist abuse more seriously by toughening up punishments.

Both teams were using the match to prepare for more important battles ahead with Hong Kong sharpening up for their Asian Cup Qualifying match in October and the Philippines toughening for the AFC Challenge Cup next year.

But the match was played at a fast pace with both teams pressing high, hoping to win the ball early and in dangerous areas. The Azkals carved out chances on the counter-attack and it was a swift move out from the backline that led to Stephan Schrock making a cross that the Hong Kong backline failed to clear.

Younghusband towered over his defender and directed his header beyond the arms of Hong Kong goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai for his eighth international goal.

Lifeline

Hong Kong was handed a lifeline when star striker Chan Siu Ki was adjudged to have been fouled by Juani Guirado inside the penalty box in the 66th minute. But Etheridge proved equal to the spotkick, saving with his left foot and showing quick reactions to clear the rebound.

Etheridge had three more sensational close-range stops as the Azkals coped with the pressure by the home side.

“It was a lucky victory but we have to take it as it is. We did not have enough time to prepare and I can only laud Neil Etheridge for his performance,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss. “Slowly but surely, the team is understanding the concept of pressing and that is what we are trying to do even if we dont have our Europe-based players.” With a report from the Associated Press

Azkals Go For Cup Clincher

The Philippine Azkals will try to overcome their last enemy in order for them to qualify for the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup. Azkals team will face Turkmenistan today in the final day of the Group E qualifiers at the Rizal Memorial Stadium at 7 P.M.

Azkals are in good mood after they win against Cambodia last Sunday in 8-0 score. A lot of Pinoy Football fans surely went after watching the Azkals match.

The Azkals team sees this opportunity as their redemption from last time failure to play in AFC Challenge Cup.

The Philippines and Turkmenistan are both tied for the spot in the group with six points apiece with the winner getting an automatic slot next year in Maldives.

The loser, however, appears to be on its way to the tiny island as well. Either team may end up with one of the two best second place records from all the five groups provided they won’t suffer a lopsided defeat.

Azkals team lost to the Turkmen, 2-1. in the 2012 Challenge Cup semifinals in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Turkmenistan won after scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes.

But last Sunday game was different, Azkals drew big performances from veteran striker Phil Younghusband and the debuting Javier Patino.

Younghusband scored four goals while Patino made an impression in front of the home fans by hitting the back of the net twice.

Also impressive was Stephan Schrock, whose trickery and ball control at the left side set up numerous scoring chances.

Coach Michael Weiss started Fil-German Roland Muller as goalkeeper in lieu of regular first-choice man Neil Etheridge and the MSV Duisburg booter earned a clean sheet.

Azkals Coach Sees Challenge Cup Success

Playing in front of their growing legion of fans, Philippine Azkals coach Michael Weiss believes they will give his players an extra zest to top 2014 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers on March 22-26 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The presence of other key foreign-based booters for the qualifiers, according to Weiss, is another reason why they could dominate the event that will also be participated in by last year’s runner-up Turkmenistan, Brunei and Cambodia.

North Korea won’t defend its title after getting a slot to the AFC Asian Cup in 2015 as a result of its win last year.

“This is a very serious tournament because in the Philippines, it’s not allowed to lose so we have to win the tournament,” said Weiss, who at presstime has yet to sign the six-month contract extension offered by the Philippine Football Federation.

The top team in the five qualifying groups will advance to the main stage of the Challenge Cup set next year in the tiny island of Maldives. The remaining three slots will be filled by the three-best second placers.

The period of the qualifiers are set during the FIFA international friendly dates, meaning that clubs worldwide will have to release their players if needed for national team duty.

Among the key Azkals playing abroad are Fulham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, Hoffenheim’s Stephan Schrock, Dennis Cagara, Paul Mulders and Rob Gier, who did a fine defensive job during the AFF Suzuki Cup.

“And I think on home soil and with the players that will be available, we have a very good chance because it’s an international FIFA date,” added Weiss. “It doesn’t mean all of them will come but I expect most of them here.”

Etheridge, Ott back for Burma friendly

Now available after skipping important tournaments last year, goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and midfielder Manny Ott have been recalled for the Philippine side that will face Burma (Myanmar) in an international friendly in Yangon next week.

Etheridge missed the AFF Suzuki Cup last year due to commitments with his club Fulham, while Ott also focused on his club career in Germany last year, forcing him out of the AFC Challenge Cup as well as the Suzuki Cup.

But with the Burma friendly on Feb. 6 falling on an international date, there seems to be no problem securing the release of Ether-idge and Ott to the team which is preparing for the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers in March.

The Azkals will face Turkmenistan, Brunei and Cambodia in the Group E Qualifiers from March 22 to 26 at Rizal Memorial Stadium. Only the top team in the group will advance to next year’s main tournament in the Maldives.

England-based defender Rob Gier, who is coming off a rock-solid performance in the Suzuki Cup, is also expected to return to the side for the Myanmar match.

After the Burma match, the Azkals may stop in Thailand to play a local club either on Feb. 9 or 10, according to Philippine Football Federation general secretary Ed Gastanes.

Azkals manager Dan Palami said the other players based in Europe like Stephan Schrock, Jerry Lucena and Dennis Cagara will be called up in the late stages of the preparation or just during the tournament itself.

Weiss may begin Azkals preparations

With a deal with coach Michael Weiss nearing completion, the Philippine Football Federation can now focus on preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers in March.

As soon as Weiss is on board, the Azkals will have two months to prepare for the Group E qualifiers on March 22 to 26 at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

“I think the main issues have been resolved,” said Azkals manager Palami in yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

“The basic terms have been agreed and we look forward to the preparations for the Challenge Cup.”

The PFF offered Weiss a six-month extension, which federation general secretary Ed Gastanes said was a collective decision involving him, PFF president Nonong Araneta and Palami.

“The decision was made … based not only the success but the problems that we had,” said Gastanes.

A three-day camp is set from Jan. 28 to 31 for the Azkals, who are flying to Yangon for a friendly with Myanmar on Feb. 6.

Palami said Fil-Spanish striker Javier Patino Lachica will be part of the pool for the Challenge Cup as soon as he gets his passport.

Patino, who traces his roots in Cebu and plays for Cordoba in the Spanish second division, is expected to fly in this week to process the requirements needed to get a passport.

In the Challenge Cup, the Azkals will face Brunei, Cambodia and Turkmenistan with the top team in the group earning a spot in the main tournament in the Maldives next year.

Gastanes hinted that Weiss could stay longer if he steers the country to the Challenge Cup main tournament next year.

Azkals U-23 Seeking Historic Finish

Azkals team manager Dan Palami believes that the Philippine U-23 team that they are tying to form this early can accomplish what the previous squad failed to do in the last SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia.

Palami cited several mistakes the team did that led to its disastrous showing two years ago, foremost of them was lack of preparations.

According to Palami, the Philippine Football Federation is now making early preparations for the squad with scheduled camps abroad in their bid to accomplish the Herculean task in the Myanmar SEA Games slated this December.

The country has yet to win a football medal since the sports was included in the biennial meet.

“I think we still have a good chance of securing a medal finish in the SEA Games and with the early preparation that we have right now, we should stand a big chance,” said Palami.

Although the pool has yet to be finalized, Palami hinted that veteran Jason de Jong, twins Marwin and Marvin Angeles, Jeff Christieans, Matthew Uy and brothers Manny and Mike Ott are among the players being considered for the biennial meet.

Neil Etheridge is still eligible to play for the SEAG team but the availability of the stocky 22-year old goalie will depend on whether his English Premier League club Fulham is willing to release their second-choice keeper for the biennial meet.

Can Azkals go farther in 2013?

Come 2013, The PH Azkals team have already proven that their stint in the past Suzuki Cup challenge is not a fluke. That they are ready for bigger challenges, bigger opponent and bigger field to conquest!

This year, the Azkals team is stronger and better equipped to face their new opponents and surely they are still eager to go farther.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2012

MANILA, Philippines - Following their repeat semifinal finish in the AFF Suzuki Cup, the challenge for the Azkals for 2013 and beyond is to sustain the momentum and surpass their achievements, according to Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta.

“Prior to the Suzuki Cup the pressure was to qualify for the Suzuki Cup semifinals once more. By qualifying again, I think they have shown that our semifinals stint in the 2010 Suzuki Cup was not a fluke. Right now with the set of players we have, the question for us is: ‘can we go farther?’” said Araneta.

Stronger and better equipped than the unheralded side that surprised Southeast Asia in 2010, the Azkals duplicated their Last-4 appearance and even went tantalizingly close to a historic finals berth, if not for a 0-1 setback to eventual titlist Singapore in the semis.

“How can we go farther? That should be our challenge after 2012,” Araneta said.

The Azkals are anticipating another busy year in 2013.

In March, they will see action in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers that Phl will be hosting at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. The Pinoy booters will be bracketed with Turkmenistan, Brunei and Cambodia in Group E, seeking to top the group to seize a berth in the Challenge Cup’s final stages in 2014 in Maldives.

“If we top the group, we’ll automatically qualify for the Top 8 (final round), composed of the winners of the five group qualifiers, host Maldives and the two best second-placers. The winner (Challenge Cup champion) will then go to the Asian Cup (2015). That’s what we’ll be preparing for,” said Araneta.

The PFF chief also said they plan to organize an Independence Cup by June.

“Hopefully, we can hold a tournament coinciding with our Independence Day. June 6-12 are Fifa calendar days so we hope we can invite teams to come over and play against our national team during that period,” said Araneta.

There’s also the possibility that Phl will stage a second edition of the Philippine Football Peace Cup – the four-nation meet that the Azkals won on home soil last year – by September.

After the holidays, the Azkals are slated to return to training on Sunday to start their buildup for the Challenge Cup qualifiers. A training camp in the Middle East is also being eyed by February.
